Hours later, we’ve finished our bartering with Bill, fetching a handsome price for the goods we’ve procured, and the Captain and I split to find more information about the Tigrid ship.

I’m also keeping a wary eye out for more of Whighorn and his goons…or Celia, for that matter. If I catch even a whiff of her fraternizing with them on Cavellia, the Captain will hear of it. And any worries of being called a snitch could go straight to hell.

But I see neither hide nor hair of either of them, and the well of leads on the Tigrid ship here has turned up dry.

I thank my third barkeep of the day for his time and head back to the Luck, where I find Ilene waiting. “Anything?” she asks, and at the shake of my head, she sighs. “Well, we turned a tidy profit. That’ll keep the crew happy.”

My eyes drift across the deck to Leo, who sits and stares at us as though he hopes to discern the content of our conversation by reading our lips…or maybe just by sheer force of will. I sigh, already dreading the conversation I know he hopes to have, and Ilene follows my gaze, barking out a laugh.

“Well,” she says. “The crew will be happy. But we can’t keep everyone happy.” She claps a hand onto my shoulder and, since no one but Leo is on deck to see it, drops a kiss onto my forehead and smooths down the hairs along the crown of my head that have managed to escape from their braid. “Goodnight, Gracie.”

“Night, Captain.”

I hold Leo’s gaze across the deck before I break our stare, shaking my head and heading for my quarters. I don’t want to deal with him tonight. Just…not tonight.
